This week we talk mostly about pen and paper RPGs and the fun we've been having playing Pathfinder - a D&D relation. We also talk about a fantastic podcast called The Glass Cannon Podcast which has taught us a huge amount about role playing and the rules of Pathfinder. And then finally we respond to a listener comment talking about how kids can be allowed to message each other using phones and tablets using an unexpectedly classic app! Check the 30 minute mark if you want to skip past all the Pathfinder nerdery.

Episode 40 - New Car!

Welcome back to the latest episode of Parental Geekery. We tried something new again this week and our recording session was streamed Live via Google+/YouTube. Make sure you circle us on Google+ to get advance notice of future live streams.

Our main subject of conversation this week is Ruth's new car - we talk about our experiences test driving the ones we were considering, and how we chose the one we chose.

John gave blood recently, and took Catherine with him so she could see what happened.

John's also been to another Manchester CoderDojo, and took Catherine this time as well. His favourite part appears to have been the bee bot!

We talk about our experiences playing the Elder Scrolls Online beta, and John is currently enjoying Warframe. Run is deciding whether to buy the Diablo 3 expansion or now. We've also been watching Hostages.

This episode is also available on YouTube here.

Parental Geekery Episode 6 - The Mystery Sound

Hello and welcome to another episode of Parental Geekery. This week we kick off with an update on David's sleep habits, and say a very special hello to our friend Claire (no, not that Claire, another Claire!).

Thanks to an audio question from our friend Rob we talk about our feelings towards kids' parties. Somewhere in the middle of this we introduce our new sporadic feature - the mystery sound. Do you know what it is? Drop us a line at parentalgeekery@gmail.com or leave a comment on this blog post and win an amazing prize*

Rob has also recorded an Audioboo follow-up to our discussion about religion. It was too long to include it in the show, but you can listen to it here.

We talk some more about cloud music storage, and turn our critical eyes to iTunes Match. We've also had the Sonos system recommended to us by Mark, and have been told about mp3tunes.com. Ruth also manages to sneak in another recommendation for her favourite iOS podcast app - Downcast.

Whilst we're talking about iOS, you can also hear whether we've order any iPhone5s, and there may be some talk about SIM troubles.

We talk about after-school activities as Catherine has had her first ballet lesson this week. Both Catherine and David have swimming lessons at Puddle Ducks and we talk about our experiences with that.

Is David learning his colours? Or is he just being cheeky to his Dad?

We have also experienced our first difficult school dropoffs - after a blissful first few days, has it all gone pear-shaped?

What we're playing: John's discovered Continent of the Ninth Seal, is playing XCOM, and we're both looking forward to the release of Torchlight 2.

* The bit about the prize may not be true... But we will give you a shout-out in the next show, which is pretty amazing!

Parental Geekery Episode 5 - The iPhone 5 Edition

After taking a week off last week we're back in full swing this week with a show recorded just after the Apple iPhone 5 announcement. Find out what we made of the new iPhone, and whether we're planning on buying or not. Is the Galaxy Note II a viable alternative? We talk about whether you should get your next phone on a contract plan or buy it outright. We also talk about 4G/LTE and its availability within the UK. Ruth mentions Mazuma Mobile as being a way to get some monet back for your old phone.

We have a listener question from Akrabat about the Kindle Fire HD, so we talk about what we think of that too. Ruth mentions a useful comparison table for different tablets.

We've signed up for Google Music (thank you TunnelBear!). John is re-ripping all our CDs into FLAC format using PhileAudio. We talk about our decluttering plans, and the state of our house. We have a Grand Plan!

Catherine started school last week, and we talk about how she's getting on. We've also started making plans for her 5th birthday party.

Finally, prompted by our friend ThermalSatsuma (who mentions the Nine o'clock service) we talk about our experiences of Christianity, and how we reached our current religious beliefs.

Parental Geekery Episode 4 - It's Dark and We're Wearing Sunglasses

We've come over a little Blues-y this week, thanks to our friend Neil. The discussion about The Road continues, and Neil recommends Blood Meridian as well. We also discover that Neil is a Western Swing geek.

We talk about Catherine's first experience of camping, and reminisce about our own camping experiences, including our worse camping experience ever. We talk about Catherine's last day at nursery, the thank you card that she wrote (there's a picture on Ruth's blog), and the cakes she made to give to her friends and the staff (with bonus adventures in green food colouring).

We talk about how David's speech is coming on, and about his desire for ice cream. We also talk about how Catherine is having to learn that her brother has his own opinions.

Ruth feels slightly bad for recommending a friend buy an Android tablet instead of an iPad - what is the world coming to?!

We talk about two apps that David is enjoying - Sort & Stack and Build & Play. You can find more information about these apps on Ruth's blog. Ruth also mentions Chalk Walk (iPad only) as being an app aimed at teaching kids the "pincer grip". John mentions Kid Mode (Android). Since recording we've discovered that this app is available on iOS as well but from reading the reviews it doesn't seem anywhere near as good.

We're watching Castle and the Paralympics opening ceremony.

John's playing Team Fortress 2: Mann versus Machine, Crysis and we're both dabbling with Legend of Grimrock. Ruth's trying to make enough time to go back to playing World of Warcraft, and has got slightly addicted to Dragon Vale (iOS only). John talks about Pocket Planes (iOS).

We'd love to hear your recommendations for board games for a future episode - let us know what games you enjoy playing as a family.

Parental Geekery Episode 3 - Eat, Fast, Live Long and Prosper

Welcome to our third episode, and this one is rather special as it was recorded on our 14th wedding anniversary. Yes, when you're an old married couple you apparently have nothing better to do on your anniversary than sit around producing podcasts!

John reveals who the harshest critics of his photography are, and we both reveal that neither of us reads the other's blog - shocking I know!

We talk about the 5:2 diet and how we're getting on with it - there is some more information about this on Ruth's blog, and you can see the Horizon documentary here on YouTube although as we mentioned there's something weird going on with the camerawork.

Our big topic for the week is Catherine starting school, and we talk about the process of choosing a school. John rants about religion in schools, and we talk about trying to make the most of our time before she starts, and how well we've done at that.

We have listener feedback, thanks to Melitsa from the Raising Playful Tots podcast - well worth adding this one to your podcatcher if you look after pre-school kids in any capacity.

We flash back to old-fashioned computing again, and John talks about his love for Blue Meanies.

What we're playing this week: Puzzle Craft (iOS only I'm afraid) and Temple Run (iOS and Android). John's had good experiences with Doggcatcher and Pocketcasts on Android, and we're looking forward to seeing Brave in the cinema. John's been listening to Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and The Road by Cormack McCarthy on audiobook, and Ruth's going to try to read The Joy of Less on Kindle. This episode has been slightly taken over by John's new-found obsession with Korean rap music. The video he talks about is Gangnam Style by PSY, but I warn you, it's 4 minutes of your life you'll never get back! We talk about whether David is giving up his daytime nap, and about Catherine's complaints of being tired. Ruth talks about a day out which she recently had with Catherine, which didn't quite go as planned (you can read more about this on Ruth's geekmummy blog post). We talk a lot about tablets, comparing John's new Nexus 7 to the iPad. We start off talking about how much you can do on the iPad these days, with a lot of talk about how good Avid Studio is for video editing on the iPad. We mention our favourite apps for listening to podcasts - Downcast for iOS and BeyondPod for Android. For Twitter we recommend Twicca or Plume for Android, and mention that Slices might be worth a try. We don't mention it on the show, but Ruth always recommends Tweetbot for iOS. We speculate as to what Apple might announce in September - a new iPhone? The iPad mini? We talk about the Kurio, an interesting-looking family Android tablet. John explains the Android naming scheme for release versions, and also tells us what Nexus actually means. What we're playing this week: My Kingdom for the Princess II on iPad and Android, Pyramid Rising for iPad and Android, Bloons TD 4 HD for iPad and Android. We advise that if you haven't already downloaded Where's My Water? on iOS or Android and Where's My Perry? on iOS or Android then you should! We also mention Spy Mouse HD on iOS and Android, and spend a while talking about an app we really like that teaches kids algebra without them realising: Dragon Box on iOS or Android.
