Parental Geekery
Episode 56 - Handbags Lead to iWatches

Here we go with another topic-packed episode of Parental Geekery, the podcast for geeky parents. Ruth and John start off by discussing the recent Apple accouncement. John describes his very "science fiction" way that he listened this time, and also expresses his joy at finally being able to sit and watch some of the announcement with Catherine. We talk about the Apple TV price drop, the new medical research apps, the new MacBook, and finally cover the iWatch - is it a hit or a miss in our geek family?

We talk about the Now TV service from Sky. UK Game of Thrones viewers rejoice - this is now the cheapest way you can watch the new season legally! We also talk about our experience of watching The Wolf of Wall Street with Ruth's aging father in the room. Perhaps not to be advised!

We've had some great listener feedback on last week's topic of suitable board games for kids. Richard and Neil both added posts in our Google+ community, and Trudy left a comment on the show notes on the web site. Incidentally Ruth had to upgrade the WordPress theme we're running in order to read that! Richard reminded Ruth that she should be watching more Tabletop on YouTube, and Neil pointed us in the direction of rpgKids, a simplified Dungeons & Dragons type game that the author developed for his four year old daughter.

Finally we talk about the need to take care with medicines, and John's fear that he had overdosed David on paracetamol. He's done the research though, and can tell you all about what levels are poisonous, and what symptoms to look for!

Episode 55 - Live Long & Prosper

This week's episode of Parental Geekery is packed with a variety of topics. We start off with a conversation about table-top role-playing games as John talks about his evenings spent playing Pathfinder with a group of friends, and Ruth bemoans a lack of D&D in her life.

We then move on to board games, and talk about the games we have enjoyed playing as a family, as well as games we'd like to play in the future. We mention The Game of Life (comparing the old edition to the new edition), Kids of Carcassonne, Catan Junior (which we incorrectly call Pirates of Catan) and Dungeon!

As a Nintendo family blogger Ruth has just been given access to download a review copy of the forthcoming Mario Party 10 on the Wii-U and we give our initial impressions of the game, which actually plays much like a board game.

We had a rare kid-free night this weekend as both of ours went for a sleepover at their cousin's house. We of course made the most of this by going out for the evening, but not with each other! John took part in a Pathfinder evening, and Ruth went to a play reading.

The saga of Ruth's gallstones continues. Ruth has now had her MRI scan, and talks about what a very "science fiction" experience it all was.

John has turned his hand to plumbing by attempting to install a new kitchen tap. You can hear how successful that was.

And we couldn't finish this week without paying tribute to Leonard Nimoy who has just died. We talk about his final tweet, and also about his photography.
