Parental Geekery
Episode 50 - The Full Half Hour

Welcome back to Parental Geekery. Taking our lead from Serial we took a break last week, but we're back now (and before the next episode of Serial!), and opening straight into an argument about iPads (like you do!).

John talks about his reaction to the New Star Wars trailer. Ruth just thinks it's great that within 24 hours of it being released someone had recreated it entirely from Lego. And then there's the George Lucas special edition. We then talk about one of the biggest geekdilemmas that there is - when is it the right time to show our kids the Star Wars movies? And which ones?

Advent has begun, and that means advent calendars, although Ruth was a little mean to the kids and kept them hidden until the last moment. We briefly talk about our experiences with Lego advent calendars.

John took both kids to the school Christmas fair. On his own.

We've been battling with kids fears this week. Catherine is getting upset because Mummy and Daddy are out a lot, and David seems to be developing a fear of the dark. One of these is easier to tackle than the other.

Coming up next year Catherine has her first ever School residential - can we cope with her staying away for a night somewhere? And can school cope with her?!

We've had some listener feedback on our recommendation for the Serial podcast last week. Neil recommends the Dr Gilmer and Mr Hyde episode of This American Life - thanks for that Neil. John's been playing Elite Dangerous which he backed on Kickstarter. It goes Live on 16th December if you want to join in the fun.

Episode 49 - Shivs, Serial and the Birthday Party of the Year

Welcome back to another epiosode of Parental Geekery. We open this week with a discussion as to what a Shiv is. Random I know, but that's how we roll sometimes!

Our friend Richard has posted a video in the Parental Geekery Google+ community that is supposed to be the next "Gangnam Style". We're not convinced, and we're certainly not going to play it on the show, but it has inspired us to share our latest obsession with you all. We play an excerpt from "Gimme Chocolate" by Babymetal.

It was Catherine's birthday party this weekend. We talk about why it came so long after her birthday, and what the party actually entailed. We also think we may have cracked that age-old problem of how to get kids to write their thank you letters.

Discussion moves to sweets, and in particular how to get more (according to a 7 year old). That 7 year old nearly got run over today.

We've both been listening to the Serial podcast, and are very much enjoying it. We also make the most of an opportunity to mention Game of Thrones again :)

John's playing Valkyria Chronicles, and wants to tell you all (again) about his revamped Photowalkthrough site.

Episode 48 - Nestling in Your Lugholes

Well would you look at that. Two episodes in the space of two weeks? We are spoiling you! As the show opens we talk a little bit about why we're so busy at the moment, and a little bit about our hard summer.

We didn't go to Alton Towers today. But we did get to see The Boxtrolls at the cinema finally. We then talk a bit about The Book of Life which Ruth took the kids to see recently, and compare both movies from a parent's point of view.

We lead into talk about superheroes, covering Disney Infinity 2, John watching Rise of the Dark Knight on Amazon Instant Video and we then talk about superhero movies for kids.

Thanks to Ruth winning a competition through the Tots100 blogging network we've had the loan of a Kia Carens for the last two weeks, and we talk about how we found it.

We touch briefly on Music streaming and bemoan the lack of a family plan for Google Play Music. We can but hope it's coming soon.

There is some discussion over Trick or Treating. Ruth wrote about how we are a family divided over this activity on her blog last week. John talks about his experiences of taking the kids Trick or Treating for the first time, and how they found it.

Finally john talks about the re-launch of his Photowalkthrough site - he'd love you to check it out as he's very pleased with it!

Episode 47 - A Bit of a Catch Up

Welcome back to a long overdue episode of Parental Geekery. We've got a lot of catching up to do. First of all, someone had a birthday last month, and we talk about that.

We were lucky enough to get tickets to the recording of the CBeebies Christmas Panto this year - we can't tell you anything about the actual show, but we talk a bit about the day. John bemoans confusing Cat and Gem, and we express our love for Dr Ranj. There's a quick mention of Little Fun Fest in there too.

David's latest obsession is Team Umizoomi, which we're watching on Netflix (UK). We give a couple of talking book recommendations for kids as well - Catherine is enjoying the Horrid Henry books whilst David wanted How To Train Your Dragon (Ruth's happy about this one as it is narrated by David Tennant :)

We talk about how David's getting on with his reading and writing. We had a trip to see Matilda in the West End. Both kids took part in a musical theatre workshop during Half Term, and we discovered that the trick to getting Catherine to attend was to tell her she would be putting on a show at the end! We also talk about the kids swimming lessons.

John is taking part in Movember again this year. He's set himself a really aggressive target, so he would be very grateful of any donations towards his mo. You can find out more on his Mo-Space Page.

John also talks about his involvement with The Arcanum

We talk about Apple's recently announced new iPads and iPhones, and close off by geeking out about Google's new Gmail client, Inbox.

Welcome back to another episode of Parental Geekery. After our discussions about the Nissan LEAF last episode we were asked about the purchase price for the vehicle, so we talk about that, along with an update on how we're getting on with the car. We do a lot of calculations of the running costs (not all of which are correct, but we think we get there in the end!), and we also talk about how the LEAF copes with long distance driving. You can read Ruth's full review of the Nissan LEAF over on her blog. We've been driving the 100% electric car for the last 6 weeks as part of the Go Ultra Low campaign.

We had a fun family day out at a PR event at Alton Towers, and tried out the new CBeebiesLand rides. You can hear what we think about that, and John reminisces about visiting Alton Towers as a kid.

And finally we talk about our experiences at the UKPod14 Podcasting conference. Huge thanks to our lovely friends who looked after the kids for a day so that we could go and network with other UK podcasters. We talk about the state of podcasting the the UK versus the US, and our takeaways from the conference.

At the end we ask if you enjoy the show that you leave us a review in iTunes. This is one thing that you could do to show you enjoy the show and to hopefully help us to attract more listeners. Thank you in advance :)

Welcome back to Parental Geekery. It's been a little while since we last recorded a show, and we talk a little bit about why, before getting onto the main parental geeking.

We talk about our experiences with the Neato BotVac 75 robot vacuum cleaner. We then spend some time talking about the Go Ultra Low campaign, and our experiences driving a fully electric car, the Nissan LEAF. You can read more about this on Ruth's blog. And we also recommend you check out Robert Llewelyn's YouTube channel Fully Charged.

Finally we reveal that John has finally taken the plunge and become a Dad blogger. You can find him at Daddycoder.com where he talks about teaching kids coding.

Episode 44 - An expensive lesson in backups

It's another episode of Parental Geekery! And we start off this week by talking about how Catherine is now keeping a diary - do we have a future blogger on our hands?

John's bought a Cricut Mini and seems to be having fun with it - he talks about what he thinks of this device.

We have an update on Ruth's dead hard drive, and had a nasty shock when restoring from her Amazon glacier backup. Listener Rob has recommended CrashPlan to us as an alternative to Ruth's CloudBerry backup.

Welcome back to another episode of Parental Geekery. We've got a lot to catch up with, since we haven't recorded a show since before the Easter holidays.

We start off talking about Ruth's recent computer hard drive failure, and the importance of backups. We recommend cloudberry for Windows and arq for Mac.

We talk about our trip to the Gadget Show Live - Ruth went on her own with a press pass, and then we all went as a family on one of the public days. John raves about his Red 5 quadcopter, and Ruth's pick of the show is the iWalk rechargeable battery. There's also an honourable mention for Tappy the tap guard.

We briefly divert into the world of Android apps and how there are still not enough educational titles on the platform. The article we refer to is this one: The 50 Best Education Apps for Android

We've been to PR events with both Hewlett Packard and Next, and John's also had a couple of trips to London on his own for events run by Panasonic and Leica.

We then talk about Easter and what happened with the Easter bunny this year (warning - don't let little ears listen to this part!) And finally we talk about Catherine losing her second tooth - thankfully she didn't swallow this one!

We talk about what we did for Mother's Day which happened in the UK recently (listeners in the rest of world do not panic, you didn't miss yours!)

We've been playing some games on our Wii-U recently and give our thoughts on the Phineas & Ferb Toy Box set for Disney Infinity and Skylanders Swap Force.

Episode 41 - Drama and Bedtime Stories

Welcome back to another episode of Parental Geekery, which like last week is also available on YouTube.

In this episode we talk about Ruth's recent return to the stage, and what John thinks of her wearing makeup.

We talk about changed to our bedtime routine, and go on to talking about bedtime stories. We've recently started reading the kids some David Walliams titles which we are all enjoying. We talk about good books for kids who are learning to read, and then talk a bit about the Independent's recent decision to not review books specifically made for girls or for boys.

We've been playing Yoshis New Island thanks to Ruth's role as a Nintendo family blogger, and have also recently been taking advantage of the Wii-U tablet play facility when one child wants to watch TV and the other wants to play Disney Infinity.

We also talk about the release of the Chromecast in the UK, and John's been watching House of Cards on Amazon Prime Video.

Episode 40 - New Car!

Welcome back to the latest episode of Parental Geekery. We tried something new again this week and our recording session was streamed Live via Google+/YouTube. Make sure you circle us on Google+ to get advance notice of future live streams.

Our main subject of conversation this week is Ruth's new car - we talk about our experiences test driving the ones we were considering, and how we chose the one we chose.

John gave blood recently, and took Catherine with him so she could see what happened.

John's also been to another Manchester CoderDojo, and took Catherine this time as well. His favourite part appears to have been the bee bot!

We talk about our experiences playing the Elder Scrolls Online beta, and John is currently enjoying Warframe. Run is deciding whether to buy the Diablo 3 expansion or now. We've also been watching Hostages.

Episode 39 - Now You Can See Us!

We're very excited about this episode of Parental Geekery, as for the very first time we are recording video as well as audio. You can see the fruits of our labours over on our YouTube channel.

We discuss some movies that we went to see over the half term holiday - The Lego Movie and Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy. We also talk about online streaming, and are pleased that Amazon have finally launched their Instant Video for Prime subscribers here in the UK. We also mention Disney's new streaming service - Disney Movies Anywhere - although we're not sure the name is accurate :)

Finally we talk about a piece of software that has made a real difference to the control we have over our finances - You Need A Budget. You can read Ruth's review on her blog here, and watch out for a competition coming soon to win your own copy.

Episode 37 - All About In-App Purchases

Welcome back to the latest episode of Parental Geekery. In this week's show we mostly talk about in-app purchases and what we think of them, but not before a quick mention of the latest Flappy Bird news.

We talk about the new UK principles for in-app purchases, which our friend Andy from Family Gamer TV has done a very good video to explain. You can find it on YouTube here.

We talk about our experiences and opinions of in-app purchase, talking about such apps as Cut the Rope 2, Candy Crush Saga, Disney Frozen Free Fall and Where's My Water 2. We also speculate on how the principles might apply to games like Disney Infinity and Skylanders.

We've finally found out what Gangsta Granny is, and give a quick update on Catherine's reading.

We close off with a mention of Voices Around The World and their very special version of a fantastic Howard Jones song.
